Janis Ian

Janis Ian plays guitar

On a cross-country trip in September 2001, I passed through Asheville, North Carolina. It turned out, there were a few tickets left to a Janis Ian concert one night—and so I went, and sat in the back row, the closet seats we could get.

Janis Ian's performance was fantastic, comic, timely, political, witty and upbeat—part of "God and the FBI." I cannot recommend her music enough.

After attending a number of events where cameras were not permitted, it was refeshing to hear Janis welcome photography. I got my longest lens and fastest black and white film. The light was low, and the shots had to be hand held. As it was, I limited myself to taking pictures while folks were clapping (and there was ample clapping), so the small camera noise might not distrub others. Lost some great shots for that, but we were there for the music, not to annoy.
